COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou football legends Mel Gray, Johnny Roland and Chase Daniel are just three of the celebrities committed to participating in the first annual John Anderson Celebrity Golf Invitational presented by Midwest Computech being held June 28 at the Country Club of Missouri.
“It’s humbling that these three men and other accomplished individuals have agreed to help the foundation raise money for such a worthwhile cause,” said Mizzou graduate and ESPN anchor John Anderson. “All of the people who have agreed to participate have incredible demands on their time, so for them to agree to come to Columbia proves that they are committed to helping kids in northeast and central Missouri.”
Other well-known personalities committed to participating in the invitational are Wyoming Head Football Coach and former Mizzou offensive coordinator Dave Christensen, longtime KOMU-TV sports director Chris Gervino, and ESPN “Dream Job” winner, MU graduate and current Big Ten Network anchor Mike Hall.
Mel Gray, a four-time Pro Bowler while playing for the NFL’s St. Louis Cardinals, is also a member of the Mizzou Athletic Hall of Fame. As a wide receiver on MU’s football team, he left school as the leader in career receiving yards and touchdown receptions. He was also a three-time All-American for the MU track team.
Johnny Roland is also a member of Mizzou’s Hall of Fame as well as the College Football Hall of Fame. He played on both sides of the ball as a defensive back and running back, and was named as an All-American in 1965. His #23 is retired and his name is one of the few on the Ring of Honor in Faurot Field. He also played eight years in the NFL, and was rookie of the year for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1966. He later served as an assistant coach for 25 years and coached some of the NFL’s greats, including Walter Payton.
Chase Daniel is the most prolific passing quarterback in MU history and led the team to unprecedented heights. In 2008, the team won 12 victories, attained the No. 1 ranking in the nation and won the Cotton Bowl in convincing fashion. He also was the first MU Tiger invited to the Heisman Trophy Presentation Ceremony in New York City. After graduating, he spent his rookie year with the New Orleans Saints, winners of Super Bowl XLIV.
Proceeds from the golf invitational will benefit the Anderson Family Charitable Foundation and the Buddy Pack program of The Food Bank (formerly the Central Missouri Food Bank). The Buddy Pack program currently provides food for school children in 20 counties in The Food Bank’s service area.
Sponsorship opportunities and a limited number of playing opportunities are still available. For more information, contact John Anderson or Susan McNay at (573) 268-5618.
